Welcome to the Sun Valley Young Men's Blog

Welcome to a blog containing information about the activities that the Young Men in the Sun Valley Ward scouting units are participating in. This blog was started and is maintained by the Venture Crew (PQ) but all three units that are in the Sun Valley YM organization are welcome to post entries and activities. The calendar here at the top of the blog will include planned activities for all three quorums. Clicking on an entry will generally provide more information especially if the entry doesn't fully show up due to space limitations. To see a listing of the activities in a list format, click on the "Agenda" link. Feel free to view the calendar and then the entries describing our activities. All three units are welcome to make blog entries about their activities and are encouraged to do so. Page down below the calendar to see the various blog entries of our activities and what we are doing.

Titan Missile Museum

On Saturday morning our crew went down to see the Titan Missile Museum in Sahuarita Arizona (South of Tucson). The Titan II missiles were commissioned in the 1960's as a nuclear deterrent during the cold war. Three sites in the United States had inter-continental ballistic missiles sitting in underground silos with nulear payloads. One of the sites was around Tucson where 18 such Titan II missiles were situated. During the Regan administration the US decommissioned all of the missile sites by blowing them up and filling in the hole - all except one that now serves as a museum.

We left at 7:00 am for the trip down. Only one of the boys could make the trip and we are glad he was able to come. The trip took about 2 1/2 hours and was pretty uneventful. The musuem and tour were very interesting and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

The museum flyer indicates that youth groups are free but when I asked about it the lady volunteer indicated that the group has to be 10 or more and they need to be wearing their uniforms. We had neither so we had to pay. Darn! It was well worth the $9.50/person cost.

Here is a short video of our adventure.
