The scouts went camping up on the rim with the goal of hiking to an old partially completed railroad tunnel that is just below the Mogollon Rim. This was the weekend after Labor Day so the key was getting a good campsite and Kehl Springs Campground off FR 300 was perfect (restroom facility, picnic tables, fire rings, etc). We arrived at the camp ground about 30 minutes before darkness settled in which was just enough time to set up our tents and get a fire started for dinner. Tin foil dinners are always a favorite and they hit the spot. Our apple cobbler in the dutch oven was marginal but we still ate it.
Bro. Selin brought some entertainment in that he had brought along one of his Robert Service poetry books. The boys seemed to enjoy listening to tales about Sam McGee, Blasphamous Bill, and Lucille. All those tales about the cold Arctic snow seemed to settle into our bones as it seemed to get downright chilly up on the rim which prompted us to seek refuge in our warm sleeping bags.
A nice fire on a chilly morning greeted the boys when they rolled out of bed and a quick breakfast and camp tear down got us on the road to finding the abandoned tunnel before the day warmed up too much. As we rode down to the trailhead to the tunnel we tried a little geocaching without a lot of luck. Eventually we found one of the geocaches on our way out.
The hike to the tunnel went down a fairly steep portion of the rim and then came back up an even steeper section of a side canyone. At first we weren't sure where the tunnel was and then someone spied a partially completed rock house. As we hiked up to the house the tunnel entrance came into view. Inside the tunnel it was nicely cool. Unfortunately, taggers had left their handiwork all over the tunnel but otherwise it was interesting to see.
The ride home was uneventful except for the stop at Taco Bell for - what else - Tacos. Yummy.
